Implementing Anubis software to protect our webs from bots and scrapers

We will soon be implementing a filter called Anubis, which is designed to block mass scanning and crawling. We will be rolling it out on our own websites and on those we host at CommonsCloud to enhance their security.

WordPress is vulnerable to scrapers and bots, code primarily managed by multinationals that power artificial intelligence (AI) farms, which visit web servers and carry out processes that hog the computer’s resources, to the point where websites become completely overwhelmed. Since 2025, we have seen a notable increase in this activity and periodically (when a wave of scraping arrives) we have to restart the web services very often.

Anubis is an open-source programme that acts as a defence barrier for web administrators. It is completely transparent to users and does not require any changes to the website. It will only be noticeable because when the website loads, a message will appear saying ‘Making sure you are not a bot!’ with a manga-style comic illustration, which will disappear after a second.
